The Jose Marti Technical High school track and field field team is currently going through a rebuilding process. Despite this, the team has been making steady progress and is now in a position to make the transition to a successful program.
The team is very young with only one member being in 6th form. The core of the team is formed by a group of boys who did very well a couple of years ago at the central athletics championship (2020). In those Championships, Omario McDonald made it to the finals of the Boys class three 100m where he finished 6th. Keon Dias and Jaiden Blake made it to the finals of the boys class 3 long jump where Blake finished 4th and Dias finished 7th. Jaiden Blake also made it to the finals of the Boys class three 200m where he finished in 7th position. The crowning moment for Jose Marti at those championships came in the finals of the Boys class three 4x100m relay when the team of Maleek Davey. Jaiden Blake. Omario McDonald and Zaniel Allen finished second behind St. Jago.
Thirteen athlete from Jose Marti qualified for Boys champs that year. The team had real prospects of earning a medal at champs as we entered with the 4th fastest 4x100m time. Unfortunately for us, champs was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2021. We took a team of only 3 athletes to champs as there were severe restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Only the top 24 athletes in the country each event were allowed to participate. Two of our athletes (Levaughn Spencer and Akeem Ennis) made it to the semi-finals of the class 3 boys 800m event. The interesting thing about this is that it was the first year that these boys were participating in the 800m.
There is great hope for them in the future. The team has been in training since July and continues to train despite the odds. For the first time in over 2 years we have 4 girls in training. We eagerly anticipate the start of the track and field season in January.
